The final day of open seminar sessions examining the cultural status of the ‘rural’. Talks will explore the idea of Local Distinctiveness, the work of rural architect and CIAM
polemicist, John Voelcker and define a new discipline of Landscape Ruralism. Hosted by Kate Darby, speakers include Dr Jos Smith, Lecturer in English Literature at Exeter University, Joshua Mardell, Architectural Historian and Building Archaeologist and Eelco Hooftman, Co-director of GROSS.MAX.
Piers Taylor, D&M Studio Master, is speaking at the “DesignBuild-Studio: New Ways in Architectural Education” symposium hosted by CoCoon at TU Berlin. Piers is presenting a lecture titled “Contingent Space – Between Designing and Making”.

The first of two open seminar sessions examining the cultural status of the ‘rural’, that will explore shifts from an urban centric viewpoint via the Pastoral, Picturesque and Sublime to a rural centric one in the work of the ‘new’ nature writers and art practitioners. Hosted by Kate Darby, speakers include Dr Jos Smith, Lecturer in English Literature at Exeter University and artists Ivan and Heather Morison whose installation ‘Skirt of the of the Black Mouth’ has recently been opened on the south side of Tate Modern.
